Formation of the Union
The founding deliberations of the Union were viewed by the Men conducting them as nothing more than a miracle, induced by the alignment of circumstances which allowed a newly birthed People to assemble freely; and to secure a Republican Government which the world had not yet known.
Alexander Hamilton observed the many difficulties of securing a Republican Form of Government, primarily the influence of Foreign Nations who envied the American Citizen and disturbances aroused by Foreign quarrels. The purpose of a Republican Government is to promote Domestic Tranquility and Happiness, yet, no Government could secure tranquility and happiness at home which does not possess sufficient stability and strength to make us respectable abroad.
Alexander Hamilton noted; “It would be madness to trust to Future miracles, A thousand causes must obstruct a reproduction of them”; Them, being the deliberations of Union. The motives of Men will become feebler and the difficulties greater, therefore, the framers of the Constitution felt an urgency to devote every effort within their being to leave the Republic in the hands of their successors with the important questions answered, or at least entertained. The Founders were aware of their own mortality and with time against them, the Constitution must be settled before the hand of God pulls them into eternity.
The important question posed was as follows: Shall we be one Nation or a Confederacy of Republics? The Founders departed this Earth not knowing the destiny of their efforts. Dr. Benjamin Franklin rightfully asserts: “I agree to this Constitution with all its faults, if they are such; because I think a general Government necessary for us, and there is no form of Government but what may be a blessing to the people if well administered, and I believe farther that this is likely to be well administered for a course of years, and can only end in Despotism, as other forms have done before it, when the people shall become so corrupted as to need a despotic Government, being incapable of any other,”
To you, the reader, I ask you to consider all of the efforts of our current Federal Government: Is our Constitution well administered? Are the minds of our people ravished with foreign quarrels of no importance? Are we Despotic? Are we living in the prophecy of our Fathers?
